Importance and cost of vet visit in Nairobi.

by geometric.co.ke 4 November 2023
written by geometric.co.ke

Regular visits to the veterinarian are crucial for the health and well-being of your pets for several reasons and in this article, we will outline the importance and cost of vet visits in Nairobi, which may also be of importance to other wild cats in Kenya parks such as Masai Mara, Lake Nakuru and Amboseli.

Importance of vet visit in Nairobi

  1. Preventive Care: Veterinary visits allow for early detection and prevention of health issues. Vets can identify conditions or diseases in their early stages, which can be easier and less expensive to treat. Preventive measures like vaccinations, parasite control, and dental care can be discussed and administered during these visits.
  2. Vaccinations: Regular vaccinations protect your pet from various infectious diseases. These vaccinations not only safeguard your pet but can also contribute to public health by preventing the spread of certain zoonotic diseases (diseases that can be transmitted from animals to humans).
  3. Disease Management: If your pet has a chronic condition, regular vet visits are essential for managing the illness and adjusting treatments as needed. For example, pets with diabetes or arthritis may require ongoing medication and monitoring.
  4. Nutritional Guidance: Vets can provide advice on your pet’s diet and nutritional needs. This can be especially important for growing puppies and kittens, as well as for older pets with changing dietary requirements.
  5. Behavioral Issues: Vets can offer guidance on behavioral concerns. They can help with issues like anxiety, aggression, or inappropriate urination. Sometimes, these problems may have underlying medical causes.
  6. Dental Health: Dental problems are common in pets. Regular check-ups can help catch dental issues early, preventing pain and complications. Dental health can affect your pet’s overall well-being.
  7. Spaying and Neutering: Discussing the timing of spaying or neutering is important during vet visits. Responsible spaying and neutering can have a positive impact on your pet’s health and help control the pet population.

Cost of Vet Visits:

The cost of veterinary care can vary significantly depending on several factors:

  1. Location: Veterinary care costs can vary based on where you live. Urban areas often have higher costs than rural ones due to differences in the cost of living and overhead expenses, in Nairobi most vet clinics will charge a consultation fee of Kes 2,000/=
  2. Type of Pet: The size and species of your pet can affect the cost of care. Larger animals often require more medication and resources, and exotic pets may need specialized care.
  3. Type of Visit: Routine check-ups are generally less expensive than emergency visits or specialized treatments. The cost also depends on whether your pet is receiving vaccinations, dental care, surgery, or other specific services.
  4. Age and Health of the Pet: Older pets or those with pre-existing health conditions may require more extensive care, which can be more expensive.
  5. Insurance: Pet insurance can help offset the costs of veterinary care, but it comes with its own premium and deductibles, however, pet insurance in Kenya is at its infant stage.
  6. Quality of Care: Veterinarians with advanced training and more sophisticated facilities may charge higher fees.

While vet visits may involve an initial financial investment, they often save money in the long run by catching and preventing health issues early. Moreover, the cost of pet ownership should be considered before bringing a pet into your home, as it includes not only vet care but also food, grooming, toys, and other essentials. It’s essential to budget for these expenses to provide your pet with the best possible care, contact us on payment plans

Understanding High-Rise Syndrome: Risks and Precautions for Your Feline Friend

by geometric.co.ke 4 November 2023
written by geometric.co.ke

Introduction:

Cats are renowned for their remarkable ability to gracefully land on all fours from various heights, showcasing their innate agility. However, this prowess does not always shield them from harm. Cats that plummet from significant heights can suffer severe injuries, an occurrence known as “high-rise syndrome.”

Unveiling High-Rise Syndrome:

High-rise syndrome pertains to the injuries cats may sustain when they fall from elevated surfaces such as interior second-floor landings, balconies, windows, fire escapes, or when they misjudge leaps between architectural features. Instances of high-rise syndrome are particularly prevalent during warmer months, when open windows and outdoor spaces attract feline curiosity.

Mechanisms Behind High-Rise Syndrome:

Cats often perch on windowsills to observe birds or bask in the sun’s warmth. A loose screen or an overly open window can lead to an accidental fall. The allure of a nearby bird or a startling noise can also trigger a sudden lunge or stumble. Similarly, balconies, terraces, and fire escapes pose hazards. Cats are drawn to these spaces for fresh air, but a misstep on a railing or through gaps in ironwork can result in a fall.

Even during sleep, cats are not immune to this syndrome. Like humans, they experience deep or REM sleep, often accompanied by vivid dreams of chasing prey. These dreams may prompt sudden movements, causing them to lose balance and fall. Awakening disoriented from a dream can also lead to an accidental tumble.

Steps to Take When High-Rise Syndrome Occurs:

If your feline companion takes a fall from a significant height, immediate veterinary attention is crucial. Even if you can visibly spot external injuries such as fractures or lacerations, internal injuries like fractured ribs or vertebrae remain hidden. A thorough physical examination by a veterinarian is essential, supplemented by diagnostic tests like X-rays or MRI scans.

Common injuries from such falls encompass shattered jaws, broken limbs or pelvis, fractured teeth or palate, punctured lungs, spinal fractures, and ruptured bladders. Treatment strategies will hinge on the nature and severity of these injuries, ranging from pain management to surgery for broken bones or internal damage.

Conclusion:

The phenomenon of high-rise syndrome serves as a poignant reminder that even the most agile of creatures can face accidents when exploring elevated spaces. Vigilance, caution, and immediate veterinary care are paramount to safeguarding our feline companions. Should you encounter such a situation, remember that it warrants urgent attention. Reach out for professional guidance and adhere to recommended emergency care guidelines to ensure your beloved pet’s well-being

Optimal Pet Dental Scaling: Elevating Your Pet’s Oral Health

by geometric.co.ke 4 November 2023
written by geometric.co.ke

Dental scaling is a fundamental aspect of comprehensive pet care, ensuring that our beloved companions enjoy a life free from dental ailments.

While maintaining excellent oral hygiene through regular at-home care is crucial, scheduling routine dental scaling sessions is equally vital for preventing dental diseases and preserving your pet’s overall health.

Why is it important?

Dental scaling is the process of removing build up of plaque and tartar from your pet’s teeth using an ultrasonic dental scaler.

Plaque: Dental plaque is a soft, sticky film that accumulates on the teeth throughout the day.

Tartar: When plaque accumulation persists, it begins to harden and ultimately turns into Tartar.

Plaque and tartar build up is the ideal environment for harmful bacteria that produces acids and toxins that damage the tissue around the teeth. This causes gingivitis and if left untreated, becomes periodontitis.

What happens when I bring my pet in for Dental Scaling?

First, a thorough physical examination of your pet’s mouth is conducted to determine if they actually need an appointment for scaling. (Remember, we never want to put your pet under anaesthesia unnecessarily).

If it is determined that dental scaling is necessary, we may elect to run some bloodwork to ensure it is safe to put your pet under general anaesthesia. (This usually entails a basic liver and kidney function test)

If everything looks good, we will go ahead and prepare your pet for the dental scaling process.

What does the process entail?

Using an ultrasonic dental scaler, we remove the visible plaque above the gum line and then using hand scalers and other tools to scrape away the plaque below the gums.

We will then clean out any periodontal pockets where bits of food and bacteria may hide. This is then followed by teeth polishing. (This polish makes it harder for plaque to adhere to the surface of the teeth in the future)

If your pet does have periodontitis, we may apply antimicrobial rinses and prescribe antibiotics or other medication.

During this time, we also look out for and note any abnormalities in the mouth.

What does aftercare look like?

Even if your pet did not have any tooth extractions done, he or she will probably have a sore mouth for the next 2-3 days.

If extractions were performed during the dental scaling, the soreness may persist for 4-5 days.

You can feed your dog/cat a small meal once they get back home (about ½ of normal amount) with the usual amount of water, and resume their usual feeding amount/regimen the next day.

If your pet had significant periodontal disease, we may send you home with some oral antibiotics and painkillers.

Be sure to look out for any blood coming from the mouth or any signs of persistent pain and discomfort and contact us immediately.

Final thoughts

Unless you have a dog that needs more regular oral hygiene care it is essential your dog go to a vet for proper scaling and polishing roughly once a year. Maintaining dental health is not just about avoiding yellow teeth and bad breath but also about protecting them against long term, debilitating health conditions. This ensures our furry friends enjoy a pain-free, smile-filled life.

Adopting a dog in Kenya

by geometric.co.ke 4 November 2023
written by geometric.co.ke

While many people who consider adopting a pet think that they are changing an animal’s life for the better, having a pet can have just as much of a positive impact on them and their families.

If you are debating on adopting a pet, here are 6 reasons why you should go for it:

1. They are great for your well being

It should come as no surprise that having a pet can significantly affect your mental and physical health.

Why Adopt a Pet

According to research, interaction with animals can significantly reduce the effects of mental health issues such as:

PTSD (Post Traumatic stress disorder)

Some doctors who recommend animal therapy often believe that it works because animals can provide a more profound connection than human to human ones and provide a less stressful avenue to physical touch, especially in cases of abuse.

Anxiety and Depression

When you stroke, play or talk to your pet, your brain releases oxytocin (also dubbed “the love hormone”), dopamine, and serotonin (chemicals that make you calm and happy)

Pets such as dogs enjoy a lot of play; walking or playing outdoor games like fetch with your dog can have tremendous benefits for your body. Studies have shown that people that played with their pets daily recorded the following:

  • Healthier weight
  • Lower blood pressure
  • Improved heart health

Introducing a pet into your child’s life during their developmental years is a great confidence booster and teaches them a lot about responsibility.

A pet can play an integral part in your child’s learning; for example, a child who might not feel comfortable reading aloud to people may feel more confident reading to a pet as they feel less under pressure with their furry best friend.

Young children can assist in feeding, grooming, or bathing your family pet, thus giving them a sense of achievement. Having a pet also teaches a child empathy toward animals and others.

The drug company Novartis Animal Health carried out an IGA antibody test (antibodies that fight infection in the immune system) on the saliva of 138 children, and the results reflected that children with pets were able to resist diseases and allergies far better than those without pets.

3. Security

From time immemorial, animals and humans have worked hand in paw to support each other in several ways. Dogs, especially bigger ones like great Danes, Boerboels, German shepherds, and rottweilers, are usually amongst the most popularly selected to guard a home as they are pretty territorial. This is not to say that smaller dogs aren’t, in fact, smaller dogs display great courage and can be equally territorial when threatened.

4. Adopting a pet saves you money

Pets adopted from shelters are probably already vaccinated, spayed, or neutered. These procedures can be pretty costly; therefore, you will save much more than buying a pet from a store.

Another way adoption is cheaper is that most animals are already house trained and acclimatized to living with humans. Some animals end up in shelters perhaps because their families had to move and could not take them along, so they are still good pets and need love and care again.

Choosing which pet to pick for you and /or your family is much broader in a shelter. Most Shelters are full, giving you a variety of species, breeds, sizes, and ages to choose from.

5. Pets can increase your social interaction

Pet lovers are most likely to socialize with each other.

A recent study noted that people with dogs have more social interactions when out with their animals than people who don’t own pets.

6. You could save a life

Unfortunately, so many shelters euthanize animals to make room for more. Adopting from your local shelter means, not only can you save its life, but you make space for other animals to have a chance at adoption.

Why you should adopt a pet in Kenya

Before Adopting a Pet; Are you ready?

Now that you have 6 great reasons to adopt a pet, here are some questions you must ask yourself:

 Are you promising forever?

Having a pet is a long-term commitment; treating it as you would any other family member should be the attitude when you invite a pet into your home—the average large dog lives for about 12 years, and smaller dogs even up to 15yrs. Cats have amazingly long-life spans, some up to 20 years!

Do you have the time?

As mentioned before, your new pet is your family member. Therefore, you need to provide the proper care for it. Besides spending time and playing with the animal, there are other factors you must consider, such as their hygiene, training, and health checks. These factors are crucial for your pet’s mental and physical well-being.

Is your house pet friendly?

While smaller pets like birds, hamsters, Guinea pigs, and the like don’t require too much space, larger animals like dogs, cats, rabbits, etc., need a considerable amount of space to exercise. It is essential to consider the requirements your pet needs in and around your home for their comfort.

Are there other pets?

One other factor to consider when adopting a pet, is having other pets. It is essential to consider whether your resident pet will be comfortable with your new pet. Some dogs, for example, might feel displaced or threatened by his or her new sibling and not willing to share his or her favorite resting spot or toys.

Training and Grooming

Keeping your pet well-groomed and healthy is very important when you adopt; most animals need regular visits to the Veterinary Clinic and groomers. Depending on the size, species and nature of your animal these visits are as many as 2 to 3 times a month. It is your responsibility to ensure that your pet sees the vet when needed. You may not have found your soul pet yet, but the right one is definitely out there for you. Go on! Visit your local shelter or pet foster homes today!

Dental Scaling in companion animals

by geometric.co.ke 4 November 2023
written by geometric.co.ke

Did you know that as much as you brush and clean your dog’s teeth regularly you still need to do a routine Dental Scaling to ensure their dental care is effectively taken care of?

Dental Scaling is the process of removing plaque and tartar from a dog’s teeth. Plaque and tartar buildup from carbohydrates in diet and create an ideal environment for harmful bacteria that produce acids and toxins that corrode the tissues around the teeth causing gingivitis and if left untreated periodontitis.

Periodontal disease is a serious condition that predisposes your dog to several health complications that can shorten your dog’s life as well as lead a poor quality of life(linked to increased incidence of heart disease, liver disease, arthritis, kidney disease etc)

Dental scaling involves the use of an ultrasonic dental scaler to remove the visible plaque above the gums and hand scaler to remove the plaque below the gums. It is important to note that your vet will always use anaesthesia to minimize discomfort to your dog during the procedure.

An added advantage of dental scaling is that your dog gets teeth polishing and thorough oral examination for cavities and periodontal diseases and these get treated if discovered.

So how often should dental scaling be done? At least once a year while older dogs, dogs with diabetes and confirmed periodontal disease and some breeds such as Shih Tzus, Bulldogs and Pugs should have regular appointments because of their jaw conformation.

Deworming in Cats & Dogs

by geometric.co.ke 4 November 2023
written by geometric.co.ke

Deworming medications (antihelmintics) are used to rid pets of intestinal worms. No single dewormer removes all types of worms, but many deworming products are effective for more than one type. Generally, products that are effective against round-shaped worms (rounds, hooks, and whips) are not effective against flat-shaped tapeworms.
Several heartworm medications have added ingredients that make them effective against intestinal worms as well as heartworms. Deworming medications are available as tablets, capsules, granules, chewables, liquids, and topicals. How often should you deworm your dog or cat?

Puppies and kittens are born with worms and should be dewormed early. Waiting until 6-8 weeks of age to worm puppies and kittens allows them to spread worm eggs that will contaminate the soil and re-infect them. The Companion Animal Parasite Council, an independent group that includes parasitologists, veterinarians, pediatricians, and representatives from the U.S. Government Centers for Disease Control made these recommendations:

Puppies: Deworm every 2 weeks from 2 weeks of age to 3 months, then deworm monthly until 6 months of age.

Kittens: Deworm every 2 weeks from 6 weeks of age to 3 months, then deworm monthly until 6 months of age.

Adopted puppies and kittens: Deworm immediately, with at least 2 more treatments at 2 week intervals.

Adult dogs and cats: Deworm every 3 months.

Pregnant pets can be dewormed through pregnancy and during whelping. This decreases the number of worms that can be passed to the young. Unfortunately, deworming medication does not kill hookworms and roundworms that remain hiding (encysted) within the mother’s muscle tissues.

Puppies and kittens started on heartworm medications that contain intestinal wormers do not need to be dewormed every 2 weeks. Not all heartworm medications are effective against tapeworms, which puppies and kittens get from fleas. However, both Interceptor Plus and Iverhart Max protect dogs from tapeworms. Other options include, either protecting them with flea medications or deworming for tapeworms every 3 months.

Why should puppies and kittens be dewormed every 2 weeks?
Some round worms will mature and their eggs will pass into the feces to contaminate the environment if puppies and kittens are dewormed every 3 weeks. Deworming every 2 weeks prevents this. The Companion Animal Parasite Council calls this strategic deworming.
Homes with children, immune-compromised individuals, or elderly persons should deworm pets to prevent the possibility of zoonotic infection. Zoonotic infections are infections that occur in pets and can be transmitted to people. Roundworms and hookworms from pets cause thousands of zoonotic infections in people in the U.S. every year. These infections cause blindness, illness, and death.

Worming throughout your pet’s life

Pets are dewormed for tapeworms throughout their lives. When worms live only in the pet’s intestines, such as tapeworms, the pet’s immune system doesn’t register the tapeworm as foreign and doesn’t make antibodies to attack it. Thus pets develop no protection to repeated tapeworm infections. Tapeworms are spread by fleas, and fleas can be controlled with Nexgard Chewables, Revolution, Bravecto Chews, and Advantage II.
Roundworms and hookworms are different from tapeworms because they migrate through the pet’s body. During their migration, rounds and hooks stimulate a pet’s immune system to make antibodies to them. Thus, adult pets with mature immune systems may naturally rid themselves of roundworms and hookworms. If pets are exposed to an overwhelming number of roundworms and hookworms, or if their immune systems are not working well, they need deworming for these worms during adulthood.

Controlling worms in your pet’s environment

Combine deworming with feces cleanup so that pets are not reinfected by worm eggs that survive in the ground. Roundworms and whipworms remain in the soil for years and are not susceptible to commonly used disinfectants, such as bleach and boric acid. However, heat above 100°F kills most worms, so that steam, boiling water, or burning straw will kill them. Immediately picking up feces dramatically reduces environmental contamination.
The Companion Animal Parasite Council developed the concept of strategic deworming, which requires deworming pets before the worms mature and produce eggs that contaminate soil. Strategic worming reduces the possibility of environmental contamination and recommends adult pets receive deworming medications every 3 months.

Tip

After successfully deworming your pet, don’t stop being vigilant for signs your pet has been reinfected. Pets can be re-exposed to worms every time they play outside.
