Did you know that as much as you brush and clean your dog’s teeth regularly you still need to do a routine Dental Scaling to ensure their dental care is effectively taken care of?

Dental Scaling is the process of removing plaque and tartar from a dog’s teeth. Plaque and tartar buildup from carbohydrates in diet and create an ideal environment for harmful bacteria that produce acids and toxins that corrode the tissues around the teeth causing gingivitis and if left untreated periodontitis.

Periodontal disease is a serious condition that predisposes your dog to several health complications that can shorten your dog’s life as well as lead a poor quality of life(linked to increased incidence of heart disease, liver disease, arthritis, kidney disease etc)

Dental scaling involves the use of an ultrasonic dental scaler to remove the visible plaque above the gums and hand scaler to remove the plaque below the gums. It is important to note that your vet will always use anaesthesia to minimize discomfort to your dog during the procedure.

An added advantage of dental scaling is that your dog gets teeth polishing and thorough oral examination for cavities and periodontal diseases and these get treated if discovered.

So how often should dental scaling be done? At least once a year while older dogs, dogs with diabetes and confirmed periodontal disease and some breeds such as Shih Tzus, Bulldogs and Pugs should have regular appointments because of their jaw conformation.
